As a professional organizer, I’ve witnessed firsthand the transformative power of a well-organized space. To achieve this, I rely on a carefully curated arsenal of tools that have become indispensable in my quest to create harmony and functionality in every environment. In this blog post, I’ll be sharing my top 10 essential organizing tools that I believe every professional organizer should have in their toolkit.

- Clear Plastic Bins with Labels
Clear bins are the unsung heroes of any organizing project. They offer visibility, making it easy to identify contents at a glance. Combine them with labels, and you have a foolproof system that keeps everything in its designated place. I use these bins from Target the most- they are super economical and a good choice when you don’t need heavy duty storage.
- Drawer Dividers
Drawer dividers are a game-changer for taming unruly drawers. They create separate compartments for various items, preventing them from becoming a jumbled mess. Whether it’s cutlery in the kitchen or office supplies in a desk drawer, dividers bring order to chaos. Cost wise, these bins from Amazon are a great deal, and I find them in peoples’ bathrooms and kitchen utility drawers all the time, although for kitchen tools and silverware I recommend checking Target’s Brightroom product line. Make sure you measure your drawers first!
- Multi-Purpose Hooks
Hooks are versatile tools that can be used in almost any room. They free up valuable floor and counter space by allowing items to be hung neatly on walls or inside cabinet doors. From keys and bags to cleaning tools, hooks are a must-have. I love these Command hooks for larger items and these Command hooks for smaller.
- Shelving Units
Adjustable shelving units are a fantastic way to maximize vertical space. They’re perfect for closets, garages, and even living areas. With various sizes and styles available, you can customize them to fit any space and storage need. For utility type storage, I like this unit from Home Depot. It comes in many other sizes, so be sure to search for the one most suited to your space!
- Label Maker
A label maker is a professional organizer’s secret weapon. It creates clean, legible labels that add a polished finish to any organizing project. Labels not only look tidy, but they also help maintain the system over time. This Brother label maker is a staple- it is both easy to use and versitile.
- Baskets and Bins
Baskets and bins are both functional and decorative. They corral items and provide a cohesive look to shelves, closets, and countertops. Choose from a variety of materials and styles to suit different aesthetics. My favorites, though, are the Y bins and Wave bins from Target- the colors available change regularly, but they are economical and come in a wide variety of sizes, including two that fit great on cube shelves (the size in both linked above is one of them).
- File Folders and Storage Boxes
For paper clutter, file folders and storage boxes are essential. They help categorize and contain important documents, keeping them organized and easily accessible. Opt for sturdy, acid-free materials for long-term preservation. Learn to use these minimally, though- the more paper you store, the harder it is to upkeep and find what you need.
- Cable Management Solutions
In today’s tech-savvy world, managing cables is crucial. Cable clips, ties, and sleeves keep cords organized and prevent them from turning into a tangled mess. This not only improves aesthetics but also reduces the risk of tripping hazards. Cable management is one of my favorite organization topics (although that’s a long list, lol), and here is a short list of some of my favorite tools at this moment:
- These cable raceways are how I made the back of my own floating desk look tidy, despite the million cords needed to run all my stuff.
- This desktop power strip lets me plug things in easily without cords running everywhere.
- These velcro ties help keep cords together and are easier to reposition than plastic cable ties.
- Cord Boxes can hide power strips and other junction points in your desk or TV setup.
- Space-Saving Hangers
Slim, non-slip hangers are a closet’s best friend. They take up less space than traditional hangers, allowing for more clothes to be hung in the same area. Additionally, their non-slip surface prevents garments from slipping off.
- A Good Quality Toolbox
Every professional organizer needs a reliable toolbox. It should contain essential tools like a measuring tape, a level, screwdrivers, and a hammer. These come in handy for small installations, repairs, and adjustments during organizing projects. I have been using an Artbin Sidekick for a while now because I like that it is compact but spacious, but I’ve had my eye on this Artbin XL for a while, which would give me a little more space.
With these 10 essential organizing tools in your toolkit, you’ll be well-equipped to tackle any organizing project with confidence and efficiency. Remember, the key to successful organization is not just the tools themselves, but the thoughtful and strategic application of them in creating functional, clutter-free spaces. Happy organizing!
